Flea/Tick and Heartworm Prevention

Dear Valued Client: Where is spring? We suspect that by the time you get this reminder, it will be too hot for all of us. Mosquitos and fleas like hot weather and their populations will explode once the warm weather arrives. Once a month treatment is the most cost effective way to control fleas, heartworm and gastrointestinal parasites. Because it is still cool as this newsletter is being written, we recommend starting the parasiticides about May long weekend – and no later than the end of June. If your pet has not been heartworm tested before, has not had a test since 2015, or was not on a heartworm preventive last season, your pet will require a blood test before starting heartworm medications. ALL PETS SHOULD BE STARTED ON SEASONAL PARASITICIDES BY JUNE 1 2018. Please contact our office at 941-6383 for questions regarding products and heartworm testing. Why is heartworm prevention and flea control important? When a mosquito carrying infective heartworm larve bites a dog and transmits the infection, the larvae grow and migrate in the body. They reside in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Once mature adult worms, they release their offspring into the bloodstream. Heartworms can be detected in the blood 6-7 months after the mosquito transmits the infected larvae to the dog. All dogs, regardless of sex, age, or habitat are susceptible to heartworm infection.

Flea and Heartworm Prevention Products

A transdermal liquid used monthly.  Application is on the skin between the shoulder blades. Prevents heartworm, inactivates flea eggs, and kills adult fleas, ear mites, and mange. Also controls roundworms and ticks.  Pet can be bathed 2 hours after application is applied.  This product can be given to heartworm infected dogs and cats but is not a cure, this is why we strongly recommend a heartworm test if pet was not on a prevention last year.

This is a once a month chewable pill that kills roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and heartworms. The flea control portion is a hormone that renders the fleas sterile. It does not actually kill the adult fleas. If you run into an adult flea problem. you will not get the population explosion of fleas in your house because the sentinel is on board, but you may want to get rid of the adult fleas on your pet by using either comfortis or capstar. Sentinel must be given with a full meal.

Tick Prevention

Ticks are becoming more and more prevalent in North America, and they’re now being found in areas where people and pets didn’t previously encounter ticks. These parasites aren’t just a nuisance; they can cause serious—and sometimes deadly—diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and tick paralysis. Contact us immediately if your pet starts coughing or has joint pain, trouble breathing, fever, weakness, or loss of appetite, weight, energy, or coordination. The best method for keeping ticks off your pet is by keeping your dog or cat on a tick preventive. Even indoor-only pets are at risk because ticks can hitch a ride inside on your clothing or shoes. Tick preventives are safe and highly effective at controlling ticks and the diseases they carry. Call us to get your pet protected today! Don’t panic if you find a tick on your dog or cat, even if your pet is on a preventive. Some preventives kill ticks after they’ve come in contact with your pet. Ticks can hide easily under your pet’s fur, so as an added measure of protection, we recommend checking your pet for ticks every time your pet comes in from outside. And don’t hesitate to ask us any questions you might have.

We will have a couple of products available to choose from this year.  One is called NexGard for dogs and it kills adult fleas before they lay eggs, and kills ticks, too. All in a delicious, soft chew that dogs love and starts to work within 24 hoursimages[3]
