Your pet should be given the support they need to ensure they age gracefully with you. Your pet’s golden years should be filled with quality time, love and special care. This includes implementing changes like regular visits with us, additions to their diet, and altering the types of activities you do together.

How often should I book veterinary appointments?

We need to see your senior pet more frequently to stay up-to-date with any changes in their health. Typically after their seventh birthday, you should be making an appointment at least twice a year. We also need to see your pet more frequently if they have any underlying health issues. During their visit, we’ll assess their overall health by checking their mobility, diet, weight, vaccination and parasite control to ensure all their needs are being met. What changes will I notice as my pet ages?

Your pet could develop health issues which make them sick or show symptoms of their illness more frequently. Many pets also have decreased hearing or vision as they age. For example, you could notice them not responding as quickly after you’ve called them, or that they are having trouble moving throughout your home with ease. They could also have more accidents around the house or groom themselves less. The most important thing is to maintain your patience and share any concerns you have with our veterinary team.

What types of health issues can my pet develop?

As your pet ages, a variety of conditions can cause health issues. Their immune system isn’t as responsive to fighting off infections. They also tend to experience the effects of wear and tear. Ensuring your pet receives proper healthcare can decrease the likelihood of developing some diseases. Early diagnosis can also help us to develop a treatment plan to ensure your furry friend’s quality of life isn’t being negatively impacted. Common health issues include:
