Warmer weather is just around the corner. Once a month treatment is the most cost effective way to control fleas, heartworms, and gastrointestinal parasites. See the list of parasiticides below. For optimal protection, your pet should be started on one of these products by June 1st of this year. Please contact our office at 941-6383 for questions regarding products and heartworm testing. Why is heartworm prevention and flea control important? When a mosquito carrying infective heartworm larve bites a dog and transmits the infection, the larvae grow and migrate in the body. They reside in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Once mature adult worms, they release their offspring into the bloodstream. Heartworms can be detected in the blood 6-7 months after the mosquito transmits the infected larvae to the dog. All dogs, regardless of sex, age, or habitat are susceptible to heartworm infection.
